What is a Knee Brace?

Types of Knee Braces
There are three main categories of knee braces:
Osteoarthritis knee braces, or OA braces, are designed to reduce pain and prevent the advancement of osteoarthritis. OA braces are often prescribed to prevent or delay knee replacement surgery.
Sports knee braces, or functional knee braces, are designed for sports and movement-based activities. Functional knee braces are often prescribed after an injury or surgery in order to protect the knee and optimize performance. Click here to explore Sports Knee Braces.
Post-operative knee braces are provided after knee surgery. These braces are used to control range-of-motion as patients recover from surgery.
OA Knee Bracing
Osteoarthritis, also known as “OA”, is the inflammation of a joint. OA can occur at any joint in the body, but most commonly affects joints in the hands, knees, hips and spine. OA may be the result of an injury or wear and tear over time. Common symptoms of OA include: pain, swelling, reduced range of motion and stiffness.
How Will an OA Brace Help?

OA bracing is extremely effective in reducing pain and swelling and in allowing patients to resume their activities of daily living. For you, this may mean completing household chores, shopping, playing with your grandchildren, or more involved activities such as sports and traveling. For mild osteoarthritis a lightweight and elastic knee brace is ideal. These braces are optimized to relieve pain and swelling through compression. They provide the knee with a sense of warmth and support. These braces are low-profile and fit under most clothing. They are perfect for those individuals in the early stages of osteoarthritis.
For moderate osteoarthritis a soft, hinged knee brace is the perfect option. These braces give patients the ability to adjust the amount of OA relief while providing compression to control pain and swelling. Moderate OA braces also offer kneecap support to control the alignment of the kneecap and assist with kneecap control.
For severe osteoarthritis an unloading brace is required. Unloading braces often feature corrective strapping and one or two upright hinges on either side of the knee. These features are designed to apply forces that reduce pain and swelling and control alignment. For moderate to severe OA, unloading braces offer the highest degree of relief and are perfect for sports and other high-intensity activities.
